Graceful Discernment

January 23

"Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.”

(Proverbs 23:9)

ree

Today’s verse offers a sobering reminder about the power of discernment in our conversations. There are times when sharing wisdom or advice, no matter how truthful or heartfelt, may fall on unwilling ears. Speaking to someone who is not ready to listen can lead to frustration for you and further resistance from them.

In recovery, this principle can be vital. While sharing experiences and encouragement is important, not everyone will be open to receiving wisdom at the moment. Trying to force understanding or advice on someone who isn’t ready can damage relationships or hinder progress.

This verse is not a call to withhold truth but to approach conversations with prayerful discernment and humility. Trust that God knows the timing and the condition of every heart. He can open ears and soften hearts when the time is right.

Are there situations where your words have been met with resistance? How can you seek God’s guidance to know when to speak and when to remain silent?

Lord, give me discernment to know when to speak and when to remain silent. Help me to trust Your timing and to approach conversations with wisdom and grace. Teach me to rely on Your Spirit to guide my words and to let go of control, knowing that You are working in every heart. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
