Humility and the Cross

April 14

"And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death: death on a cross."

(Philippians 2:8

Humility is one of the most difficult virtues to embrace, and yet, it lies at the very heart of the gospel. Today's verse reminds us that Jesus, though fully divine, chose to humble Himself. He took on human form, walked among us, and submitted Himself in obedience to the most brutal form of execution known in His time: the cross.

Humility is not weakness; it is strength rooted in surrender.

This was not weakness; rather, it was power restrained. Jesus didn’t have to endure suffering, but He did so willingly. His humility wasn’t just a moment in time; it was a way of life. From the manger to the cross, Jesus modeled what it means to lay down one’s life for those He desires.

This kind of humility speaks directly to our journey with Christ and the struggles that reside within that journey. Many of us come from places of pride, control, and self-reliance. Yet the path to freedom starts with surrender. Just as Jesus humbled Himself in obedience, we too are called to do the same, submitting our will to God and trusting Him with every step.

Christ’s obedience brought our redemption. His humiliation brought our healing. And now, we are invited to walk that same road, not to earn salvation, but to reflect on the One who saved us. Humility is not weakness; it is strength rooted in surrender.

Where in your life is God calling you to humble yourself? What does obedience look like for you today?

Jesus, thank You for humbling Yourself to the point of death; death on a cross for me. Help me to walk in that same humility today. Teach me to surrender my will, trust in Your ways, and follow You with obedience and love. In Your name I pray, Amen.
