Living in Freedom

January 28

"All things are permitted for me, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.”

 (1 Corinthians 6:12)

Freedom in Christ is a beautiful gift, but it comes with a call to discernment. Paul’s words in today’s verse remind us that while we may have freedom, not everything is good for us. True freedom is not about indulging in every desire but about living a life that honors God and promotes growth, health, and holiness.

Many things may seem harmless, but they can quickly become controlling forces in our lives. Addiction, harmful habits, and even seemingly innocent distractions can master us if we’re not vigilant. Paul challenges us to ask not just, “Can I do this?” but, “Should I do this? Will it bring me closer to God or pull me away?”

Therefore, we should exercise our freedom wisely, recognizing that our choices have consequences. God’s Spirit empowers us to choose what is beneficial, to set healthy boundaries, and to walk in the true freedom that comes by surrendering to His will.

What habits or behaviors might be permissible but are not beneficial to your recovery? Are there areas in your life where something is mastering you instead of Christ?

Lord, thank You for the freedom You have given me in Christ. Help me to use that freedom wisely, choosing what is beneficial that you can be glorified in all I do. Guide me to walk in true freedom as I grow closer to You each day. In your precious name I pray. Amen.
