Only God Is Good

May 5

"But Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.’"

(Mark 10:19)

Today we live in a culture where "good" is assigned casually to most people. In today verse, Jesus points us to a deeper truth: true goodness belongs to God alone. It’s not something we achieve; it’s something only He has obtained.

Jesus alone fulfills the standard of true goodness.

Here we are called to humility. Left to ourselves, none of us are truly good. Even our best deeds are touched by selfish motives, ego driven pride, or fear. Scripture reminds us that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). No amount of effort, morality, or religious performance can bridge the gap between our brokenness and God's holiness and goodness.

For those of us in the faith, this truth is freeing. We don't have to pretend to have it all together. We don't earn God's love by being "good enough." Instead, we come honestly, admitting our need, and trusting in the goodness of Christ who acted on our behalf by giving up His own life in order to save ours.

Jesus alone fulfills the standard of true goodness. He is the perfect sacrifice, the spotless Lamb who covers our failures with His righteousness. When we place our faith in Him, His goodness becomes our covering, and His Spirit begins the work of making us new.

Are you still trying to earn God’s favor by your own goodness, or are you resting in the perfect goodness of Christ?

Father, I confess that on my own, I fall short of Your perfect standard. Thank You for sending Jesus, who alone is truly good, to save and redeem me. Help me to rest not in my performance, but in Your grace and goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
