"Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!"
(Deuteronomy 6:4)

This verse, known as the Shema, is one of the most foundational declarations in all of Scripture. It begins with a simple yet profound call: “Hear, Israel!” God is not just giving a command; He is calling for undivided attention. What follows is a truth that defines everything: “The Lord is our God, the Lord is one.”
In a world filled with competing voices and countless distractions, this verse centers us. It reminds us that there is only one true God; not many, not a mixture, and not a god of our own making. He is singular in His nature, supreme in authority, and faithful in relationship. He is not a piece of our lives; He is our life.
This truth was meant to shape Israel’s identity and behavior, just as it should shape ours. We are called to live with a singular devotion to the one true God. In recovery, this truth becomes even more vital. Many of us once lived with divided hearts; seeking peace in addiction, comfort in idols, or identity in our performance. But now we are learning to listen again. We are learning to hear.
The Lord is not just a god. He is our God. Personal. Present. Powerful. And because He is one, our hearts must not be divided. The next verse calls us to love Him with all our heart, soul, and strength. But that begins here; with listening, with remembering, and with declaring: “The Lord is one.”
Are you listening today? Is your heart fully surrendered to the One who alone is worthy?
Lord, You are my God, and there is no other. Help me to quiet the noise around me so that I may hear Your voice clearly. Give me a heart that is wholly devoted to You and undivided in its love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
