"Ill-gotten gains do not benefit, but righteousness rescues from death."
(Proverbs 10:2)

In a world that often measures success by wealth, possessions, and status, Proverbs offers a sobering reminder: not all treasure is true treasure. "Ill-gotten gains,” those obtained through dishonest, unjust, or selfish means, may provide temporary pleasure, but they ultimately leave the soul empty.
Addiction often promised quick rewards but it left lasting scars.
At first glance, the benefits of worldly gain can seem appealing. Money, power, and influence promise security and satisfaction. But when these are pursued apart from righteousness and when they are gained through deceit, manipulation, or sin, they provide no lasting value. They cannot rescue the soul. They cannot save us from the consequences of sin or the reality of death.
In contrast, righteousness, a life aligned with God’s truth, is what truly rescues. Not because we can earn salvation through good deeds, but because righteousness is the evidence of a heart transformed by God. It points to the work of Christ, who offers us His own righteousness in exchange for our sin.
Today's verse serves as a reminder of the futility of chasing after things that never satisfy. Addiction often promised quick rewards but it left lasting scars. Now, by God's grace, we are called to pursue a different kind of treasure; one that cannot be stolen, corrupted, or lost.
What are you chasing after today? Are you building your life on temporary gains, or on the eternal foundation of righteousness through Christ?
Father, help me to seek after true treasure. Guard my heart from chasing empty gains and lead me in the way that brings life. Let my life be marked by integrity, trust, and a deep desire to honor You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
