Where Is God Now?

May 4

"Then Gideon said to him, ‘Pardon me, my lord, but if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us?...”

(Judges 6:13)

Gideon’s words echo a cry that has been repeated throughout generations: If God is with us, why has all this happened? In the face of suffering, oppression, and silence, Gideon voices a deep and honest frustration. Where is God in the pain? Why doesn’t He act like He did before?

God’s silence wasn’t absence. Rather, it was preparation.

At the time when this was written, Israel was being crushed under the weight of a foreign adversary. Their land was ravaged, their spirits broken, and hope seemed out of reach. Gideon, like many of us in times of crisis, looked at his circumstances and assumed God had abandoned them.

But God hadn’t left. In fact, He was speaking; right to Gideon. The Lord was preparing to use this hesitant and fearful man to bring deliverance to His people. God’s silence wasn’t absence. Rather, it was preparation.

For those of us who are walking through trials, this verse is deeply relatable. We may ask, “Where were You, God, when I was at my lowest?” However, He still answers us with truth and purpose. God hasn't forgotten you. In fact, He’s calling you, and often this call comes in the center of our pain.

Have you asked God where He is in your struggle? Are you willing to listen for His response?

God in heaven, thank You for listening to my cries of doubt and fear. Even when I feel abandoned, remind me that You are near. Give me faith to trust that You are working in the silence and provide me the strength to follow when You call. Amen.
